The Tamil Nadu Prisoners Welfare Council (TNPWC) has expanded its rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives through significant academic partnerships. TNPWC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Madras School of Social Work (MSSW) to launch India’s first Postgraduate Diploma in Social Reintegration, a specialised programme designed to train professionals in supporting the post-release rehabilitation of prisoners. This pioneering initiative aims to develop a skilled workforce capable of delivering structured reintegration, counselling, community-based support, and evidence-informed after-care services.
In addition to academic capacity-building, TNPWC is also funding collaborative research projects with the University of Madras and the Tamil Nadu Prison Department. These projects focus on key areas such as impact assessment studies, the development of India’s first Welfare Plan for Prisoners, and the creation of India’s first Sentence & Release Plan tailored to individual prisoner needs. Further research domains include social reintegration models, strengthening after-care systems, and promoting evidence-based corrections to improve outcomes and reduce recidivism.
These initiatives collectively position Tamil Nadu as a national leader in modern, research-driven correctional welfare and reintegration practices.
